Music is increasingly being reproduced with the help of computers and mobile phones. This is the case for the domain of MP3. Serious music lovers however prefer lossless, CD quality or higher, sources.

Home stereos nowadays use network technology for playback. This requires a number of ‘functions’ like:
- storage,
- control,
- metadata in a database and
- digital to analog conversion.
These functions can be incorporated into one device but usually storage is on a computer or NAS, the database server can be on a computer, NAS or on a networked audio player and so on.
Depending on what choices are made,  there can be limitations in number of tracks that can be indexed and the speed of the user interface - often on a tablet or smartphone - can vary.

And then there is the difference in sound quality.
For although the digital information stays in tact, audible differences are frequently reported and also perceived by the author. It appears that buffering the data just before the digital to analog converter does not solve this, but a very careful circuit design does. 

There are several approaches, each with its own advantages and disadvantages in use and sound quality, which are discussed in this presentation.
